Glenn County, CA — Glenn County Health and Human Services Agency, Public Health, announced today that it has received two grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to advance local traffic safety initiatives. The funding will support programs focused on Child Passenger Safety ($185,000)—educating parents and caregivers on the proper use of car seats and booster seats to ensure every child travels safely—and a Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program ($120,635) designed to promote safe behaviors and practices for people walking and biking throughout the county. Both grant programs will run through September 2026.

"We are thrilled to receive these two grants, which allow us to continue supporting our child safety seat education program and launch a new bicycle and pedestrian safety initiative in Glenn County,” Glenn County Health and Human Services Agency Director, Laura Hawkins said. By focusing on education, awareness, and promoting safe practices, we aim to reduce crashes, prevent injuries and create a safer community for everyone.

Grant funds will support a variety of activities aimed at improving both child passenger safety and bicycle and pedestrian safety throughout Glenn County such as:

  • Child safety seat inspection events and education classes.
  • Child safety seats at no-cost for families in need.
  • Partnering with local organizations on car seat safety community outreach efforts in underserved communities.
  • Bicycle training courses that educate youth on safe riding behaviors.
  • Helmet fitting inspections and distribution of helmets to children in need.
  • Community and school education presentations.

“Through safety programs and strong partnerships, we are working toward a future where everyone—whether walking, biking, or riding in a car—can travel safely in California,” OTS Director Stephanie Dougherty said. “By supporting projects that help families understand the importance of properly using car seats and boosters, and by encouraging people to prioritize safety in their daily choices, we are creating a strong culture were protecting every traveler, especially our children, is always the priority.”

Funding for these programs was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
