Willows, CA – Wednesday June 9, 2021 Glenn County Sheriff’s Detectives identified the Victim of a shooting that occurred on Tuesday night, in the rural Orland area, as 40 year old Rafael Vargas Chavez of Corning.

 

The Victim was visiting a relative at a residence on County Road 20 in the Orland around 8pm on Tuesday evening.  Several unidentified subjects came onto the property, an altercation ensued and Vargas Chavez was fatally shot. Several of the involved parties fled the area.

 

Glenn County Sheriff’s Deputies found the Victim in the yard of a nearby residence after he had attempted to flee the scene of the altercation on foot. Glenn County Sheriff’s Deputies rendered first aid until Paramedics arrived and exhausted all life saving measures without success. The Glenn Investigations and Narcotic Task Force was called to investigate the crime. The incident is being investigated as an intentional homicide and no other information is available at this time. Information will be released as it becomes available.

On 6/8/21 at approximately 8:00 pm, Glenn County Sheriff’s Deputies, Orland PD Officers, and California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officers responded to the area of County Road 20 and County Road M in Orland for a possible gunshot victim.  

 

Deputies arrived on the scene approximately 3 minutes after the initial call for service was made to 911.  Deputies located an adult male on the ground near a residence on County Road M and a large Marijuana grow.  Deputies requested medical aid for the gunshot victim as other law enforcement officers secured the scene.

 

The victim was treated (on scene) by ambulance personnel and members from the Orland Fire Department.  Medical personnel was unable to resuscitate the male and he was pronounced deceased at the scene. 

 

The investigation into the incident is ongoing and the deceased subject’s name is being withheld pending identification and notification of next-of-kin.  Additional information will follow in supplemental News Releases.
